Son of Yugoslavian immigrants born in the Iron Range of Minnesota, Carl was an aspiring journalist working for UPI when the war broke out in the early 1940s. He joined the service and was pressed into duty as a code breaker. He lost his life just five days after the end of the war in Europe in May of 1945.
